Writing (and drawing) on the Wall

Having only done a wall mural (a kid’s room) over 15 years ago, I was a little nervous given this project to depict “The Coffee Bean Belt” at the new location of Endiro Coffee in Iganga. I am, afterall, a digital artist more than an illustrator / muralist.

Here’s my process for this 10 feet wide by 6 feet tall art.

1
For a mural this size, it is absolutely necessary to sketch the art on a smaller scale within grid lines. The grid when transferred onto the wall provides a good idea of proportions. A leveler will be your good friend.

A shoutout to Singapore (right) and Oklahoma (left); my two homes in the Southeast Asia and the U.S. respectively.

My tools; coffee of varying intensity, burlap, brush, and handy-dandy fingers (ie. they were taped because of bruising from the initial round of staining … lesson learned).

Final touches included more staining and adding infographic elements (with coffee beans and fun facts) into the mural to tell “The Coffee Bean Belt” story. Another mural was created for the Endiro Coffee location at Mbale … see before-&-after below for both murals. See also the third wall I got to paint on the same trip.
