My Affair with a Grocer

In 2017, I stepped into a Trader Joe’s for the first time as a friend and I loaded up on some road trip -type food for our 14-day adventure through the country of Mexico.

I was immediately intrigued by how different this grocer is. It goes beyond their highly addictive peanut butter pretzels, colorful hand-drawn signage, and the bell-ringing at the checkout lanes.

Before heading south towards Mexico, we decided to take a picture in front of Trader Joe’s, excited about our purchase of bread, canned smoked herring, peanut butter pretzels, trail mix, etc. for the road-trip.

There’s something about their staff Trader Joe’s call Crew Members. Besides wearing Hawaiian shirts or colorful tees with hibiscus motif, these people seem genuinely happy to be working there.

I Fly Away…

No matter how many trips I make to the country I grew up in, the first wave of humidity, the first smell of an air-conditioned cab, the first sight of my parents’ 12-story apartment block, and the first taste of mom’s herbal chicken soup are never dulled by repetitions.

And prior to arriving at the metropolitan city of Singapore, I enjoy flying through the troposphere and time-zones while most people would cringe at the sound of a 24-hour journey across continents.

Call Me (Maybe)

Do you dread calling those corporate 1-800 numbers to get answers to questions related to products / services? Do you hate having to provide the same personal info again despite having done so in response to the (forever long-winded) automatic answering system?

While it is still comforting to talk to a living and breathing person, my experience in the last two months communicating with two companies has altered my expectation of customer service. Continue reading
